Zip FAQs

Commonly Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions moving companies have about Zip.

Getting started

What is Zip?

Zip is moving company software built for small and mid-sized movers with 1 to 10 trucks. It runs the whole business — leads, quotes, scheduling, dispatch, crews, payments, and paperwork — from one place, with mobile apps for both the owner and the crew.

Who is Zip for?

Zip is built for the small mover: the owner-operator still on the truck, the new mover just starting out (even before the first truck), and the owner running a 3–10 truck operation. It's deliberately not built for enterprise fleets — that focus is why it stays simple, fair, and easy to use.

How do I get started?

Book a demo on gozip.com and a real person walks you through Zip — usually the same day — and gets you set up. Every new account starts with a free 7-day evaluation, no card required.

How long does setup take?

Minutes, not days. Zip works out of the box with sensible defaults, so most owners are quoting and booking the same hour they sign up. There is no implementation project, no onboarding fee, and no training period.

Do I need training to use Zip?

No. Zip works out of the box with sensible defaults, and it's simple enough that a new office hire or crew member can use it on day one. Most owners are comfortable within their first hour.

Can I start on Zip before I have a truck?

Yes. The Solo plan is built for a new mover just starting out, even before the first truck. You quote, book, and get paid on the same complete product a 10-truck company uses, and move up a tier only when the jobs come.

Switching to Zip

Can I switch to Zip from SmartMoving, Supermove, or Chariot?

Yes. Zip's team brings over your customers, upcoming jobs, and history at no charge, and there is no onboarding fee. Because Zip is month to month, the main thing to check is where you stand on your current provider's quarterly or annual contract.

Will I lose my customer history when I move?

No. Your customers, upcoming jobs, and job history come across with you, so a repeat customer who calls next spring is already on their record in Zip.

How long does switching take?

Setting up Zip itself takes minutes. Bringing your data across is handled by the Zip team while you carry on running jobs, and most movers are quoting from Zip the same day they sign up.

Do I have to stop using my old software on a set day?

No. There is nothing to cut over at midnight. Start quoting new leads in Zip whenever you like, and let jobs already booked on the old system finish there, or have Zip's team bring them across so the whole calendar is in one place.

Quotes & booking

How do I send an estimate with Zip?

Open the lead, add the rooms and items — or send a photo link and let the AI inventory build them — set the crew and truck, and send. Most estimates take a few minutes and go out from a phone. The customer gets a link they can read, sign, and pay a deposit on.

How does the AI photo inventory work?

You send your customer a link, they photograph each room, and Zip turns those photos into a room-by-room item list. You review and adjust it before the estimate goes out, so you are always the one who approves the final number.

Can my customer sign and pay a deposit online?

Yes. E-signature and the deposit are part of the estimate link, so a job can go from quoted to booked and paid without anyone printing, scanning, or driving back out for a signature.

Does Zip follow up on quotes for me?

Yes. A quote that goes quiet gets chased automatically with short, plain messages of the kind an owner would send themselves — not marketing blasts. They stop as soon as the customer replies or books, so nobody is chased after they have already said yes.

Where do my leads come from?

Leads from your website, calls, and texts land in one list. Every quote, job, message, and payment for a customer sits on one record, so when they call back for the next move the whole history is already there.

Dispatch & crew

How does dispatch work in Zip?

Assign the truck and the movers to the job on the dispatch board. The job appears in the crew app for everyone assigned, carrying the addresses, the inventory from the estimate, the checklists, and the Bill of Lading.

What happens when the schedule changes on the morning of a move?

The change goes to the crew app straight away. There is one version of the day, so nobody ends up working from a plan you updated an hour ago — no group text, no ringing round three crews.

Can my crew use Zip in the field?

Yes. The crew app puts moving-day details in every crew member's pocket — jobs, addresses, inventories, checklists, and paperwork — so the office and the truck always see the same thing. There's no per-user fee and no limit on crew accounts.

Can a dispatcher or office manager run the day instead of me?

Yes — and you can still see everything they do from the owner app. Users are unlimited, so a dispatcher or office manager has full access at no extra cost, and you both see the same jobs, the same schedule, and the same numbers.

Is there a limit on crew accounts or users?

No. Users and crew are unlimited on every plan. Zip's tiers are based on how many moves you complete in a month, not on how many people use the software, so hiring a crew for the summer never changes your bill.

Mobile apps

Does Zip have a mobile app?

Yes — two. The owner app lets you run the whole business from your phone: quotes, schedule, payments, and how the day is going. The crew app gives every crew member the day's jobs, addresses, inventories, and checklists. Both work on iOS and Android.

What is the difference between the owner app and the crew app?

The crew app is for running a job: the day's work, the inventory, the checklists, the Bill of Lading, the payment on site. The owner app is for running the company: sales, the schedule, the money, and how the day is going overall.

Can I run my moving company entirely from my phone?

Yes. Quoting is built to happen from the cab between jobs — that is the owner-operator Zip is designed for. Everything you can do at a desk you can do from the owner app, and the owner app is not a cut-down version of the desktop product.

Does my crew need special hardware?

No. The crew app runs on the phones your movers already carry, iPhone or Android, so there is no hardware to buy and nothing to hand out at the yard.

Are the apps included, or extra?

Both apps are included on every plan, along with unlimited users and crew. Zip's price depends only on how many moves you complete in a month.

Paperwork & payments

Can my crew sign the Bill of Lading on a phone?

Yes. The Bill of Lading, contracts, and e-signatures are all digital in Zip and get signed on a phone or tablet at the job. Signed paperwork stores on the job itself, so the office can pull it up later without chasing paper.

Is a digital Bill of Lading legally valid?

Yes. Electronic signatures on a Bill of Lading are valid under the federal E-SIGN Act and equivalent state law, and digital BOLs are now standard practice across the moving industry.

Does the BOL carry my company's name and terms?

Yes — your company details, branding, and standard terms sit on the document, so what the customer signs looks like it came from your business. The inventory and job details are filled in from the job itself.

Can the crew take payment on site?

Yes. Crews collect the signature and the card payment on site from the same phone. Invoices, surcharges, and the final balance all sit on the job, so the money is closed out before the truck is back at the yard.

What about extra charges on move day, like stairs or a long carry?

Add them to the job as surcharges — stairs, long carries, extra hours, an added truck. The invoice reflects the move that actually happened rather than the estimate you sent a fortnight ago.

Do payments cost extra?

Payments are part of every plan, like every other Zip feature. Your Zip subscription is flat monthly pricing with no contract and no per-user fee; card processing itself carries the usual processor rates.

Support & your data

What kind of support does Zip offer?

Real human support, 7 days a week. Questions get answered by people who know the moving business — not a ticket queue or a chatbot. Email sales@gozip.com anytime.

Who owns my data?

You do. Your leads, customers, and job history are yours, and if you ever leave Zip you keep lifetime read-only access to all of it — free. Your data is never held hostage, gated, or put on a deadline.

What happens to my data if I cancel?

Your service runs to the end of the period you've paid for, and after that you keep lifetime read-only access to your leads, customers, and job history at no charge. There is no contract to escape and no deadline on your own records.

Can I get help setting things up the way I run my company?

Yes. A real person reaches out when you start, usually the same day, and the same people are the ones who answer when you write in later. Zip is a small, focused team, which is exactly why the support is good.

About Zip

Who makes Zip?

Zip is made by Version One Labs LLC, founded in 2024. It is bootstrapped and independently owned, with no outside investors — which keeps it permanently on the small mover's side rather than under pressure to chase bigger customers or raise prices.

Is Zip built for large moving companies?

No, and on purpose. The bigger platforms started with small movers and then moved upmarket. Zip is built only for movers with 1 to 10 trucks, and its product, pricing, and language are tuned to that operator specifically.

What features does Zip include?

Every Zip plan includes everything: CRM with quotes and follow-ups, scheduling and dispatch, the owner and crew mobile apps, payments and invoicing, digital paperwork like the Bill of Lading with e-signatures, and AI inventory. There are no feature gates between plans.

Does Zip build websites for moving companies?

Yes. Alongside the software, Zip builds fast, professional websites for movers that are designed to win jobs from Google and convert visitors into booked moves — $195 to build and $10 a month to host. See Websites for Movers.
